Treasury yields rise, Bitcoin runs

The market rebounded Friday despite another rise in Treasury yields, with investors favoring catalyst-backed momentum over rate relief.

Materials led as copper and rare-earth names surged, banks pushed the Dow above 53,000, and Bitcoin’s 6.4% jump reignited crypto-linked stocks. The session’s split was just as telling: Tesla rallied through a massive China recall, while Alibaba sank despite 45% cloud growth because AI spending crushed earnings.

Stocks heat ran outside the blue chips. $SLS bulls chased another cancer-vaccine read-through, $BABA dip-buyers stayed extremely bullish, and $TGTX traders treated another unconfirmed takeover rumor with appropriate trust issues.

  • After the Bell: Alibaba’s AI bill came due, while critical metals caught fire.

  • Stocks: Tesla balanced robotaxi expansion against a China recall, and crypto found buyers.

AFTER THE BELL
Alibaba’s AI Bill Comes Due

Alibaba shares sank Friday after fiscal first-quarter results showed that its cloud business was accelerating, but the spending required to feed it was hitting earnings. The market liked the AI engine and hated the fuel bill.

The RIP: $BABA fell 8.6% to $119.34 on 2.3x recent volume. Revenue rose 9% to $39.64B, cloud revenue grew 45%, and adjusted earnings per ADS dropped 42% to 8.52 yuan, below the 11.28-yuanestimate. Quarterly capital spending reached 67.7B yuan

Cloud growth is now strong enough to carry the long-term argument, but holders need it to outrun Alibaba’s planned 380B-yuan three-year AI infrastructure build. The Stocktwits room treated the selloff as an overreaction and kept pointing toward $135 and $150, even as Friday’s close left those levels well overhead. The next report must show that 45% cloud growth can produce expanding margins, not just bigger data-center receipts. ☁️

"The algos clearly marked this down because of the upfront AI capex spend that Alibaba is investing in now."

"Why is this dumping on such a beat? Earnings was fantastic, growth is strong."

Critical Metals Catch Fire

Critical Metals led Friday’s materials rally after CEO Tony Sage said its Tanbreez rare-earth project in Greenland remained on schedule for first production in 2029. USA Rare Earth, Energy Fuels, and copper giant Freeport-McMoRan joined the rush as traders chased the Western critical-minerals buildout.

The RIP: $CRML surged 22.6% to $7.11$USARjumped 12.6% to $19.26$UUUU gained 8.9% to $15.14, and $FCX climbed 7.6% to $76.66. Freeport reached a new high, while Critical Metals traded at 2.7x its recent pace.

These stocks offer very different versions of the same trade. Freeport is producing copper and gold now, while Critical Metals is targeting 2029 production and USA Rare Earth burned roughly $184M across operations, capital spending, and equipment deposits during the first half. Retail’s mood captured the gap perfectly: the Critical Metals room stayed bearish despite the 23% rip, while USA Rare Earth and Freeport traders were already calling for $30 and $80.

STOCKS
Tesla’s Two-Speed Friday

Tesla rallied Friday as Nevada regulators cleared a path for a much larger commercial robotaxi service in Clark County. Hours later, China ordered the automaker’s largest recall, covering nearly 3M vehicles whose emergency door releases may be difficult to identify.

The RIP: $TSLA gained 5.1% to $362.86 on 58.6M shares, or 1.8x its recent pace. Nevada’s permit ceiling reaches 5,000 robotaxis. China’s 2.98M-vehicle recall covers Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles beginning Sept. 25.

The Nevada approval sets a regulatory ceiling, not a deployment count, so holders still need to see how quickly Tesla adds paying rides and whether its Cybercab clears federal requirements. The China fix relies largely on warning labels and an over-the-air window-control update, limiting repair complexity but leaving an ugly safety headline. Stocktwits bulls were already eyeing the $370s, while bears treated Friday’s strength as another upper-trendline rejection.

Crypto Finds the Buy Button

Bitcoin jumped 6.4% to $77,448 Friday as renewed ETF demand and the liquidity trade sparked by Treasury’s expanded long-bond buybacks lit up crypto-linked stocks. Robinhood led the charge, while Coinbase and Strategy confirmed the move was bigger than one broker.

The RIP: $HOOD surged 13.7% to $108.13$COINgained 8.2% to $186.49, and $MSTR rose 6.1% to $119.25. Robinhood traded at 2.8x its recent volume pace, while Coinbase traded at 2.1x

Robinhood holders now need Bitcoin’s move to translate into sustained trading activity, not another one-day volume sugar rush. Coinbase traders were already taking weekend profits near $188, while the Strategy room complained that a 6% gain alongside Bitcoin’s rip was “a move for ants,” with dilution getting the blame. The next test is whether Bitcoin holds near $77,000 through thin weekend trading and ETF demand returns Monday.

POPS & DROPS
Trending Now

$SLS +15% | SELLAS: The waiting game just got louder

60.7K WATCHERS · 80% BULLISH · HIGH ACTIVITY

SELLAS surged as Moderna and Merck’s cancer-vaccine breakthrough continued spilling into smaller immunotherapy names ahead of the REGAL leukemia trial’s final analysis. No REGAL results have been released, leaving the bullish room to decide whether the delayed 80-event trigger strengthens the survival case or merely stretches the binary wait.

$TGTX +8% | TG Therapeutics: The rumor revived an old argument

21.6K WATCHERS · 68% BULLISH · LOW ACTIVITY

TG Therapeutics jumped after an unconfirmed Betaville alert suggested renewed takeover interest from an unnamed biopharma company. The speculation landed after BRIUMVI revenue rose 64% in the second quarter, but the community still has to price a growing standalone franchise against another buyout rumor with no identified bidder.

$TRLV +8% | Trulieve: The listing changed who can join the trade

7.7K WATCHERS · 70% BULLISH · HIGH ACTIVITY

Trulieve rallied as its NYSE listing and the DEA’s defense of moving marijuana to Schedule III renewed interest in U.S. cannabis operators, with Green Thumb adding 2%. The bullish room is debating whether better exchange access and tax treatment can finally attract institutions or whether federal reform remains one hearing away from another delay.

$CCJ +7% | Cameco: The rally failed to convert the bears

17.3K WATCHERS · 40% BULLISH · LOW ACTIVITY

Cameco gained 7.2% and Uranium Energy surged 14.2% as investors returned to the nuclear-fuel trade built around data-center demand and tightening long-term uranium supply. Cameco issued no fresh company announcement Friday, leaving its bearish room to argue whether the move restarted the nuclear cycle or merely bounced a stock still well below its January high.
