The Weekend Rip: Aug 23

The Weekend Rip
Happy Weekend!

It was supposed to be retail week, but Moderna and inflation stole the show.

Let's recap and prep you for the week ahead.

Monday : Rising crude, climbing long-term yields, and megacap tech weakness turned the session into a broad risk-off retreat. Semiconductors and AI infrastructure offered the counterpunch as SanDisk extended its rally and Duos unveiled more than $500M in hosting orders. Nike’s 12-year low and Fabrinet’s after-hours reversal showed how little patience remained when expectations cracked.

Tuesday : Long-dated yields and a 5% chip selloff pushed stocks into a defensive crouch. Home Depot’s beat could not calm growth worries, while Amylyx’s Phase 3 win and Klarna’s guidance wipeout split the company-news board between feast and famine. Defensives held the line, but rates near their highest since 2007 kept the market’s inflation headache fully funded.

Wednesday : A personalized cancer-vaccine breakthrough powered health care and carried the S&P 500 above 7,700 while technology slipped. Moderna’s 177% surge, Merck’s record, and the biotech sympathy rally gave retail a rare fundamental moonshot to chase. Target and Estée Lauder strengthened the consumer side, but hawkish Fed minutes kept rate risk alive.

Thursday : Rising Treasury yields and Walmart’s soft U.S. sales turned a retail warning into a broad risk-off close. Defensive stocks offered little shelter as health care and consumer names absorbed the heaviest selling. Marvell, Cipher, and Bitcoin kept a speculative pocket alive, but the bond market retained the final word.

Friday : Stocks rebounded broadly even as long-term Treasury yields climbed, with Bitcoin and materials doing most of the risk-on shouting. Robinhood led crypto proxies higher, Tesla shrugged off China’s 2.98M-vehicle recall, and critical-minerals stocks caught fire. Alibaba supplied the counterweight, tumbling as 45% cloud growth collided with a much larger AI bill.
